♦ Must meet the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)
definition of homelessness and provide proof of homelessness:
Living in a car
Living on the street
Living in a shelter
Has been formally notified of impending eviction
Living in a place not meant for human habitation
♦ Must be 18 years of age or older.
♦ All adults in the household must work or work and go to school at least
28 hours per week every week that you are in the program.
♦ Must not have resided at the House of Refuge in the past.
♦ Total family size must be 6 or less.
♦ Please be advised that the House of Refuge also runs a background
check on all applicants. These are items that disqualify applicants:
Must not have been convicted of a violent or drug related crime in
the last 2 years. Date of discharge will be the tool to use from the
background check to validate the 2 year criteria.
Must not have any outstanding warrants.
Must not have any convictions for sex related offenses on record.
Must not have had more than 1 eviction in the last year (not
counting current eviction).
♦ Must be alcohol and drug free.
♦ There is a $25 per adult non-refundable application fee.
♦ House of Refuge is a social service program that requires monthly
meetings with your case manager and attendance at our self-help
classes.
♦ No pets allowed.

REQUIRED documents:
- Proof of income (pay stubs, unemployment printout, employment verification)
- Social Security Card or a legal document showing your social security number (such as a copy of a tax return). One for each member of the household.
- Homeless Certification (Proof of Homelessness)
Examples of Certification are the following:
- An eviction notice
- Letter from home owner of current residence stating you can no longer live in the home, signed and notarized
- Motel bill from where you have been living
- Photo ID
- Application Fee - $25.00 (non-refundable) (money order)
ALL of the documents listed above are REQUIRED to begin the application process.
These documents are required to be turned in at a scheduled intake meeting, which lasts approximately 1 – 1 1/2 hours. |
